USA National Games - Healthy Athletes

Healthy Athletes is something that we need to have at any Special Olympics Competition around the world because you never know what is wrong health wise with the athlete until they go through the screenings. On the very first day Healthy Athletes opened we screen the most ever at any competition ever close to 700 screenings. We had six disciplines there Health Promotion, Fun Fitness, Hearing, Eyes, Feet and Smiles. For those of you who dont know me I love smiles the best because it saved my life 6 years ago. I was getting my teeth screen by a volunteer who told me I need to go see a dentist right away to get my teeth x-ray because he knew I had some problems. My coach took me to his dentist who did the x-ray's then after looking at them came back in and told me that I had Oral Cancer in the upper left side of my mouth. Im thankful for that volunteer and all the other ones who helped out in Nebraska because I would not be alive today if it was not for there help. We I went to Healthy Athletes on the first day to check it out I went to Smiles to talk to the people I know in there and they told me that they caught a pre-cancer leasion on an athletes bottom lip. That really hit home with me, then my very good friend and founder of Special Smiles Dr. Steve Pearlman took me up stairs on the Stage of the Pershing Center and I saw one of the most amazing sites that I ever seen. For the first time ever we did free dental work for all the athletes who needed work done. The work they did for the athletes was cleanings, fillings, extractions and a few more. This was all made possible by the Nebraska Dental School and the America's Dentists Care Foundation who provided all the tools for the work to be done. But every area in Healthy Athletes is important so to all the athletes who have not gone threw this area before at your state games please go through it because as I said earlier you never know whats wrong till you get screened.

2010 US National Games Opening Ceremonies

Wow what can I say but Amazing. It started with the premier of a new song for Special Olympics writen and preformed by Rachel McClusky who has a CD out right now called "Beleave Me" its a great CD. But her Be a Fan song that she did for the Opening Ceremonies was great and hopefully with everyones help in Special Olympics that will be a Number 1 hit all around the world. Then after that Martha Hill, a International Global Messenger from Wisconsin and myself who got to do the Parade of Athletes. It was hard to keep up are energy for a hour and a half while all 48 delegations marched into the Devaney Center in Nebraska. But we got through it. I was getting pumped up so much watching all the excitement from the athletes marching in. It was really fun and special for me watching my Southern California group walk in. After that we had an amazing person sing the national anthem. The opening ceremonies was co-hosted by Broklyn Decker and Eddie Barnbell the star athlete actor from "The Ringer". I know I got emotional when it shared the story of a Missiouri athlete who surviored a near death experience and became really close to his sister. I also got emotional when it did the tribute to Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver I was sitting infront of her two grand-daughters and when I looked back I saw how sad they looked and told them that "Everyone misses there Grandma and we all love her and will never forget her."

2010 Summer Games - Volunteer to Cheer

For our three largest events, Basketball Championships (March), Fall Championships (November) and Summer Games (June), we encourage the community to "Volunteer to Cheer." People can easily find all the details they need via our Volunteer to Cheer Web site: http://www.volunteer2cheer.com/. The site reflects the new campaign, which we launched for Summer Games. We'll use this same look and feel for Basketball and Fall and refresh it again next Summer Games (the events are in different parts of the state so it works well).
With the campaign, which was designed by PUNCH, we are fortunate to have many resources -- a poster, a Facebook ad, print ads, online ads, a billboard design, a radio spot, etc. We encourage our sponsors and partners to activitate using the available media, and we work to share the opportunity with the entire community, specificially the schools.
This year (our third year of promoting Volunteer to Cheer at Summer Games) we broke an Volunteer to Cheer record with 2002 fans! We exceeded our goal by 2 fans -- and we couldn't have been more excited. We look forward to seeing where this campaign takes us in the coming years. We also had some great media coverage, including this story/video/photo slideshow in the state's largest newspaper: http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/state_regional/article/OLYY13_20100612-215005/350779/

Eunice Kennedy Shriver's Legacy

We are here today to celebrate many great achievements. Achievements of many individuals who have decided stand up for one belief. That one belief is acceptance. Acceptance was the very idea of one individual born on this day in 1921. That individual was Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She not only gave all people with disabilities a dream, but a reality. The dream of being accepted and treated as equals by all Americans. The dream to compete in sports like their peers. The dream to be able to earn the many things that people with disabilities were denied in the first place. That dream became a reality. That reality is Special Olympics.
Special Olympics has led to as many great events and achievements in the lives it has touched. It has led a global movement of acceptance and unity. It has led governments to pass legislation for people with disabilities such as the Americans with Disabilities Act. Special Olympics is more than a non-profit organization. It is the world as it should be, full of acceptance, respect and unity. We would not be here with a better understanding of disabilities if was not for Eunice Kennedy Shriver and her dream. She is the person who has inspired millions of people to bring forth change in society. She is the person who believed that all people with and without disabilities can live together. She is the person who changed the hearts of millions to understand the abilities of those people with disabilities. If it were not for her hard work and dedicated effort, many things would be different today.
It is sad that she no longer with us. However, she is in the hearts and spirit of every individual she has touched. For within us, we are all Special Olympics athletes. For within us, we are all united. For within us, we are able to make change in everyone’s lives. If it were not for you, many of us would be looked down upon as outcasts of society. We miss you dearly but we will continue on your legacy for generations to come around the globe. Through the handing off of the Flame of Hope, volunteering, competing, and coaching, we will carry on your legacy, Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
